The Friends’ semiannual Giant Used-book salE! May 18 and 19

Here’s your chance to stock up on your favorite summer reading, music, and movies

Saturday, May 18

10 am – 11 pm: Members Preview. 11 am – 5:30 pm: Everyone welcome Paperbacks, 25 cents each ~ Hardbacks, 50 cents each. Come today for the best selection!

Sunday, May 19

12 noon – 4:30 pm:  Books by the Bag Fill up a bag of books for only $1! You are welcome to bring your own bag.

The sale takes place in the large conference room at the Hercules Library. Proceeds go toward Library programs and collections.

Wednesday, May 1

4 pm – Hercules Library Teen Promoters The HTLP is dedicated to fundraising for the library as well as planning and hosting teen programs. If you’re in 8th grade or older, come to our monthly meetings and help make the library a better place for teens! If you join the group, you'll get community service hours AND you'll eat tasty snacks. :)

Saturday, MaY 4

11:30 am–2 pm – R.E.A.D. to a Dog! Come to the Hercules Library and read to a dog! But not just any dog. R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers to help kids read. The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program improves children's reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. Register for this event at the Library children's desk. Children may bring their own books or choose one from the library, and they should not have allergies to dogs or be fearful of dogs.

Tuesday, May 7

4 pm – LEGO at the library Join us for the library’s monthly LEGO Club in the large conference room. A chance to have fun and be creative! For ages 5-12. (***Warning***LEGO parts are small and a choking hazard for children 3 and under.)

Wednesday, May 8

1:30-3 pm – Mother’s day card Crafting with HTLP Come make Mother's Day Cards for your mom, grandma, sister, aunt or maybe even your favorite librarian! Hosted by the Hercules Teen Library Promoters.

Thursday, May 9

2-3 pm – Yoga with Janice DeJesus Join us for an introductory yoga class with teacher Janice DeJesus, Hercules resident and author of OmStruck: Healing Heartbreak through Yoga and Meditation. Janice’s gentle approach will leave you relaxed and limber instead of wincing and limping back to your car. Bring a mat or towel to lie on and dress in comfortable clothing that allows easy movement.

Monday, May 13

1 pm – Monthly Musical! Join us on the second Monday of every month as we break out in song with a classic Hollywood musical. Call the library for details. This month: See courtesan Nicole Kidman fall for a poet in Turn of the Century Paris. (The library’s contract with film distributors prevent us from specifying the actual title in our publicity.)

Tuesday, May 14

4 pm – Pokemon Club Meet new friends and players, watch some Pokemon movies! We welcome Yu-Gi-Oh fans, too! For kids 5-11.

7-8:45 pm – Lawyer in the Library-Immigration Law Immigration attorney Michael Epstein of Epstein Husby Immigration Law will conduct brief individual consultations regarding immigration issues. Drop-in, first come, first served. Se habla Español. Lo que usted necesita saber sobra la ley de inmigracion.

10 pm-5:30 pm – Friends of the Hercules library Book Sale! The first hour is the advance sale for Friends members only, to allow you the best selection. Everyone is welcome from 11 am on. Paperbacks are 25 cents; hardcovers are 50 cents.

Sunday, May 19

12 noon-4:30 pm – Friends of the Hercules library Book Sale continues! Buck-a-Bag Day—fill a bag with books for only $1. You are welcome to bring your own bag.

Monday, May 20

7 pm – Great Books discussion Group Join us for this month’s discussion. We’ll be talking about The Stranger by Albert Camus.

Tuesday, May 21

4 pm – Chess Club Chess players of all ages are invited to play informal, friendly games. Beginners and advanced players are welcome to participate. We encourage you to bring along a friend or opponent. Chessboards will be provided. 

6:30 pm – Board Meeting of the Friends of the HerculeS Library—All welcome Friends members and the public are welcome to attend the Friends board meeting. Find out what the Friends are doing to support the library and chime in on the discussion.

Wednesday, May 22

3 pm – Hercules Library Gardening Party Join the Hercules Gardening Club to help plant our Summer Reading Festival garden, in honor of this year’s Summer Reading theme: “Reading Is So Delicious.”

5 pm – Learn about Recycling Ever wonder what happens to metal, wood, plastic and paper when it is recycled? Did you know that many different kinds of products are made using recycled material, including jewelry, toys, clothing, automotive parts, building materials, insulation and much more? Curious about how much energy is in a can? Join us for an informative presentation from the Contra Costa County Department of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Happy recycling! For kids and teens.

3:30 pm – after school movie Join us to watch a PG-13 movie! Snacks are provided and the DVD is raffled off at end of the event. Call the Library at 510 245-2420 for details. This event is hosted by the Hercules Teen Library Promoters.

Mondays, May 6, 13, 20

1:30-3 pm – Life Skills Classes Join us for the first of this new series of weekly classes, which will focus on skills everyone needs to be successful. Topics to be covered include: Personal Finance/Money Management, Healthcare Management, Goal Setting, Attitude/Self-Esteem, Problem Solving, Getting a Job and Keeping It. This is a collaboration between the Hercules Library and ToTouch One, Inc.

3 pm – Monday Movie for kids Join us for family-friendly, G-rated movies in the Story Cone.

Tuesdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

2-3 pm – English Conversation Class Here’s the opportunity to practice and improve your English language conversational skills in an informal, small group setting, as we discuss the news and other relevant topics.

Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

10-11 am – Play Pals
Parents: you don't have to wait for storytime to come to the library with your little ones! Bring your babies, toddlers, and preschoolers in for free playtime with puppets, toys, puzzles, music, and friends. Chat with other parents, meet new playmates, and of course, find new books to read to your child. Moms’ groups welcome.

10-11 am – Intermediate computer classes Practice your computer skills while searching the Internet, sending e-mails, creating greeting cards, and more.

2-3 pm – Basic computer Skills Drop by to practice such skills as using the mouse, word processing, searching the Internet and more.

Thursdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

10 -11 am – Computer Lab Practice Our computer lab is open for beginning computer users. Under the guidance of one of our expert computer mentors, you can drop by to practice such skills as: using the mouse, word processing, searching the Internet and more. All levels and questions welcome!

4 pm – GameS and Fun for Teens and tweens Come and play games at the library! Different games every week, and frequent tournaments and prizes. * May 2-- Board games * May 9 – Video/Wii games * May 16 – Board games * May 23 and 30 – Video/Wii games

Saturdays, May 4, 11, 18, 25

2 pm-4 pm – Hercules Library Knitting Group Looking to spend a Saturday afternoon with great company, good conversation, and creative ideas? Then gather your knitting needles, crochet hooks, looms, and yarn and join the Hercules Library knitting group. All skill levels welcome! For ages 11 and up.
